Social Apples is a community-driven website that shares all of the greatest Apple-related news, live coverage of all Apple events and a great discussion platform in a minimalist style that makes reading the most important news more enjoyable.
We started this site as an App Review (CocoaTouchApps.com at that point) website in 2008 right after the launch of the iOS App Store… we were the first of our kind. We were the largest and most visited App Review website and continue to expand our reader base through the incorporation of all Apple news, discussions and great writing. If there’s anything else we can do to make this site more enjoyable for you, click the mail icon in the sidebar and tell us about it.
We dedicated our site to the iPhone and iPod touch initially, but Apple has been busy creating wonderful new products for us to enjoy. As we predicted, Apple introduced their tablet computer on January 27th, 2010 and they called it the iPad. Without much criticism, Apple then changed the OS name from “iPhone OS” to “iOS” in 2010 since they weren’t just selling iPhones. In September of 2010, Apple also introduced a new Apple TV that’s running iOS software. On January 6th, 2011 Apple gave us the Mac App Store: the same look and feel of the iOS App Store but specifically Mac-focused. Finally, in the Summer of 2011 we’ll see Mac OS 10.7 Lion — a mesh of everything iOS with the capabilities of the Mac OS.
As you can see, we can’t cover iPhone apps any more. There’s too much great news to choose a specific focus. So we’re covering all of it with the help of our readers. We are Social Apples.
Writers
Writing for a blog offers great connections and unique experiences. You don’t have to have to “drink the koolaid” or own an Apple laptop… you just have to be able to present the news in an interesting, witty, and sometimes humorous manner. It’s not all glamorus: sometimes commenters can be ruthless and you have to be willing to express your opinions without fear of the flaming wrath that may come your way. Even still, we’ve never found a more rewarding job out there. We get to connect with other Apple users on a regular basis and discuss the things we care about most.
To write for Social Apples, you’ll need to have a healthy obsession with Apple products. We also need to know that your writing abilities are up to speed. We mentioned interesting, witty and humorous, but we’re also looking for people who write with great grammar and concision. In order to properly gauge the writing abilities of anyone who’s interested, we’re asking that you complete three writing samples and send them to us in an email. Please do not be formal; everything we do here is informal. Here are the topics:
- Write a review of your favorite iPad, iPhone or iPod touch app. 500 words or less.
- Discuss a current piece of Apple news. 500 words or less.
- Write about your favorite Apple-related product or application: not an iPhone app, not made by Apple. This should be feature-length, about 1,000 words.
If we find that your writing style matches our requirements, we’ll hopefully bring you on board sooner rather than later. We’ll also be in touch with you if we’ve decided not to use your talents. Unfortunately, we have to be picky with who we bring on board… we have to be willing to put forth the best product possible in order to keep growing. Thanks for your interest!
